As She Likes It: Feminist Filmmaking from the Vienna Underground

This event will explore the all too rarely seen world of feminist film art in Vienna's long-burgeoning underground art collectives.

Valie ExportCovering an eclectic range of political & sexual trajectories, from the scathingly personal to the affirmingly whimsical, these films address the injurious framing of women as marginal textual objects in varying social contexts and meet the challenges of the "male gaze" head on.

In reclaiming the order of language - the filmic as verbal - these groundbreaking filmmakers have fearlessly defined their own paths of self-expression amid the chaos of global change.

A representative group of films will be shown to give viewers a taste of this influential and ongoing movement. A brief introductory talk will be given by Tyran Grillo (BA in Women's Studies, MA candidate in Japanese Language & Literature), who will also lead a discussion following the screening.

Films by Valie Export, Mara Mattuschka, Martin Arnold, Ursula Pürrer, and Hans Scheirl will be represented. This will be the first time any of these works have been shown in the Valley, so don't miss this unique opportunity for an empowering visual treat!

Please note: some of the film clips contain partial nudity.
