a brief history of our little collective

Food for Thought Books
is the Connecticut River Valley's only not-for-profit, workers' collective bookstore. In existence since 1976 (when it began as a table of books at the old Amherst Food Co-op), we have grown and evolved in many ways over the years. More than just a bookstore, we strive to be a community resource for the pleasantly diverse group of people and organizations that make up the progressive & radical communities in the Valley.

As a worker-owned collective, we operate without a boss or single owner through cooperation, communication and consensus. We all share the benefits and responsibilities of running our own business.

We specialize in the following areas: Progressive, Multicultural & Radical Media, Queer Studies, Women's Studies, Fiction & Poetry, Music, Comix, Media Studies, Science & Ecology, Education, multicultural & progressive childrens' books, and much more.

We're located conveniently in downtown Amherst, MA right across the street from Bart's Ice Cream, kitty-corner from the Post Office. Parking can be had on the street or in the CVS parking lot right behind us.

Come visit us! We look forward to seeing you soon!
